A Simple Killing
While trying to take her own life, Mai is interrupted when a young, pregnant woman in distress calls to her door in desperate need of help.
As an old Irish song plays softly in the background, Mai, a middle-aged Asian woman, sits with a shotgun in her mouth, ready to end her life. Finger on the trigger she’s interrupted by a panicked voice from outside her Irish countryside home.
Reluctantly relinquishing her hold on the gun, Mai opens the door to Anna, a pregnant young woman in labour. Anna has arrived at Mai’s doorstep badly hurt. Despite Anna’s attempts to downplay her injuries, Mai sees through the facade, connecting with her over shared experiences of loss. Anna shares the truth of her injuries, domestic abuse.
Their moment of connection is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Terry, Anna’s partner. Anna hiding in the kitchen watches on as Terry, claiming to be Anna’s concerned brother, interrogates Mai before presumably leaving.
Terry’s arrival sets off a chain of events that lead to a violent confrontation, leaving Mai injured but determined. With the memory of her daughter giving her strength, Mai faces Terry in a final showdown bringing about her own form of justice as the sound of sirens in the distance break her new found peace.
